About

Paper is quietly magnificent and magical. It stands intertwined within so many aspects of our lives and everywhere it joins all things; the connections are limitless and yet barely noted. It carries function, purpose, clarity, our crafts, our arts, expression, our music; it holds our histories, our research, our scientific discoveries, our interconnectedness. It unassumingly carries forward and protects our thoughts, gifts, hopes, belongings, and really, all things considered.

Hand papermaking for me really began when I had the opportunity to apprentice at Magnolia Editions in Oakland, California. It was my great honor to work with David Kimball and Donald Farnsworth, the Magnolia artists, students, and customers, and to work within that creative environment for five inspired years. I have since been sharing the craft and art of handmade paper alongside raising a family and moving through life’s endeavors, always grateful for the balances. My interest in papermaking as process and aesthetic need has evolved, but remained steadfast. I am currently enjoying collaborations and inspiration as a Resident Artist at ASiF Art Center in Grass Valley, CA.

Kodama is the Japanese term for tree spirits or deities, sacred protectors trees. When my children were young, we chose this name for our paper studio; it was inspired by the delightful animated film, My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki.
